According to information from oil price stabilization fund, the subsidies granted by public authorities for rationing in domestic gas over the past five years amounts to 106 billion CFA francs.

This donation from the State corresponds to the import of 259,000 metric tons of domestic gas to ensure local consumption of this source of energy during the period mentioned above.

These cargoes of gas are intended to offset the deficit in production of the national refining company (SONARA), which produces between 10 000 and 15 000 metric tons per year, of which the annual demand is estimated at 80,000 metric tons.

Indeed, applying the reality of price on this product, 12 Kg bottle would cost 11 200 CFA francs to the final consumer, compared to 6000 francs CFA, the official price adopted in 2006, which has been revised upwards since July 1 at 6500 CFA francs.

Domestic gas is subsidized in Cameroon because it is an instrument for combating desertification in the northern part of the country where the use of firewood is harmful to the environment, and deforestation in the South of Cameroon part.
