Government lends WACS submarine cable to CAMTEL

The public telecommunications operator in Cameroon, CAMTEL officially took possession of the landing point of the submarine fiber optic cable WACS, built by MTN and surrendered to the State of Cameroon.

It was during a ceremony chaired September 4, 2014 at Batoke near Limbe in the South West, by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Jean Pierre Biyiti bib Essam.

Through the surrender of this infrastructure at its imminent operational phase, the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications said it expects not only improved internet and telephony services, but also costs reduction, as well as boosting activities such as e-commerce, telemedicine and e-learning.

WACS is the second submarine optical fiber cable that CAMTEL manages besides the SAT 3. It is 14,500 km long and has a capacity of 5.2 Tbps, for a wavelength of 40 gbps.

The landing point of this infrastructure has been estimated by the financial audit conducted by the firm Axxis, at more than 2 billion CFA francs.
