Officials of the Ministry of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries (MINEPIA) participated in a meeting to brainstorm on how best the country can increase its fish production with the ultimate goal being to move Cameroon from a fish importing country to a fish exporting one.

The conference organised on 31st March 2015 was on the theme, “Fish cultivation for an emerging Cameroon?”

Prior to the conference, the Minister of Livestock, Fisheries and Animal Industries, Dr Taiga led a delegation to a fish farm in the Ahala neighbourhood of Yaounde.

The Minister was very happy with the efforts of the private sector in boosting fish production.

Dr Taiga announced that 2015 has been designated as the year for the promotion of large-scale fish farming in Cameroon. He wondered why 100 billion CFAF should be spent yearly to import fish to satisfy local demand when there are many professionals in Cameroon.

Experts in the sector are determined to work in small initiative groups to stop the yearly 200,000 tonnes imported in Cameroon. They are being encouraged by President Paul Biya’s interest and promise to boost the sector.
