IRAD develops 12 new improved varieties of beans

The Institute of Agronomic Research for Development (IRAD) of Cameroon has already developed twelve new bean varieties, we learn from reliable sources.

These performances were achieved as part of the “leguminous plants and vegetable products” project, implemented in this institute since 2012. The new varieties, according to IRAD, can produce with yields of up to 2 to 3.5 tons per hectare, which is at least four times higher than the traditional varieties of beans which exist in the country, and whose yields are hardly higher than 875 kilograms per hectare.

In addition to their high yield, we learn, these twelve beans varieties developed by IRAD are suited for the different soils and agro-ecological areas of Cameroon. They will help with, it is hoped at this research institute, increasing the local production of this legume rich in protein.
