While a third operator started its activities in September, and a 4th mobile network operating licence being granted in the country, the subsidiary of the South African telecommunications group Mobile Telecommunications Network (MTN) confirmed in the first nine months of the year 2014, its leadership in the sector in Cameroon, ahead of the subsidiary of the French group Orange on customer bases and revenues generated.
From the interim results produced by the two groups on their key performance for the period ending September 30, 2014, it is clear that the number of subscribers at MTN-Cameroon increased very quickly, to 11,233 million consumers representing an increase of 9.7% from one year to another. At Orange, this same progression was observed, but in a lower proportion with 6,465 million customers only.
MTN Cameroon also dominated its main competitor's overall revenue. At Orange Cameroon, indicators suggest that gross revenues accumulated in the first 9 months of the year were 213 million euros, approximately 139, 632 billion CFA francs.
At MTN, the overall third-quarter financial figures are not yet published, but already for the first half at the end of the month of June 2014, the company said they achieved a total income of 3.048 billion South African Rand, or slightly more than 144 billion CFA francs, to which the 25,526 billion CFA francs of revenue in the 3rd quarter 2014 must be added, what would be a total income of nearly $ 170 billion FCFA.
