Regular downpours in the economic capital have triggered the sale of the indispensible tool.

“Can I use your umbrella?” is the phrase on every lip in offices, business places, schools and homes in Douala. Considering the amount of rainfall and the number of times it rains in a week, there is no doubt that the rainy season has begun.

Seasonal traders have started stocking their shops with umbrellas of different sizes and qualities. Near the Deido Roundabout, hawkers are conspicuous, pushing two-wheel carts stuffed with umbrellas, targeting passengers alighting from taxis and those waiting to board one. Jude Achia, a well known seasonal trader, disclosed that placing orders early ensures better turnover.

“With the changing climate, one never can tell when the rainy season will begin. To have a cool head, I placed an order some time ago and received my consignment from Nigeria early this month. This places me a step ahead of my competitors who rush to Mboppi Market, Douala, to buy after merely observing the day’s weather,” he explained.

The umbrella business, though seasonal, is profitable. A trader can make over 75,000 FCFA on rainy days if they are in strategic positions. Umbrella hawkers in Rond-point Deido, like in other busy junctions, make much profit. During rains, traders make exceptional profits as people are obliged to reach their destinations on time and in dry conditions. The cost of umbrellas varies according to the quality. Small pocket umbrellas are sold at between 700 FCFA and 5,000 FCFA. However in classy shops, ‘quality’ pocket umbrellas are sold at between 5,000 FCFA and 37,000 FCFA.
