They carted away with the safe on July 30th but quick police intervention saved its content.
Elements of Mobile Intervention Unit (GMI 3) Bafoussam led by its commander Senior Police Superintendent, Bernard Nkwentamo, have recovered the safe of the Regional service of the National Social Insurance Fund (CNPS) that was carted away by men of the underworld, on the night of 30th July 2012. The safe was discovered in a nearby bush on the outskirts of Bafoussam where the thieves' efforts to break it open proved abortive.
According to Bernard Nkwentamo, his elements, while on a routine control, were alerted by some villagers of the Inno neighbourhood that a suspected group of persons were parading the area. He said the attitude of these suspects prompted the villagers to manhunt the area where they discovered the safe hidden in the bush. Commissioner Nkwentamo revealed further that when the police approached the scene; the thieves disappeared abandoning a motorbike that was later handed to the judicial police for investigation.
Talking to the press, the acting interim CNPS Chief of Centre, François Leopold Mpouam Mba said he was informed late of the incident for the men of the underworld arrived the premises of the National Social Insurance Fund at about 1.30 a.m. They were seven in number as reported by the lone security guard on duty that night. He said the thieves caught the security guard working with Essoka Security Company and tied him up before going in for their operation. Mpouam said the three doors leading into the financial clerk's office were all destroyed and the safe carted away.
The security guard, Emmanuel Danze, declared that the men of the underworld later called in a car that transported the safe in top speed. What surprised the police superintendent Benard Nkwentamo, was that 8 policemen with the help villagers could not lift up the safe into a double-cabin lift back Toyota and that only a caterpillar was called in to carry the safe to the premises of CNPS. "That 7 men carried it away is a big surprise," he noted.
The thieves failed to reach the FCFA 1.3 million that was inside the safe due to police intervention.
