International golf tournament in Yaounde

Golf Tournament Women Cameroon

The tournament for women brings together participants from West and Central Africa.

An international golf tournament christened West and Central Africa Challenge Trophy kicked off on Monday in Yaounde. The tournament organized by the association known as Royal and Ancients in partnership with the Cameroon golf federation brings together female amateur golf players from some eight countries from West and Central Africa.

In prelude to the event, the British High Commissioner to Cameroon, Brian Olley on Monday organised a reception at his residence to the visiting delegation and officials of the golf federation in Cameroon with the Minister of Sports and Physical Education, Adoum Garoua as guest of honour.

Speaking on the sidelines of the reception, Adoum Garoua said government has a policy of supporting all sports federations in the country. He thanked the organisers of the Yaounde tournament saying it was a welcomed initiative which will go a long way to reinforce cooperation ties among the participating countries. He said it was a pleasant surprise to see African women playing golf and called on the president of the golf federation to organise such competitions often as golf was beginning to gain grounds in Cameroon.

The Assistant Director of golf development for West and Central Africa at Royal and Ancients, Marie Cecile Poncet expressed gratitude to the British High Commissioner and the Minister of Sports and Physical Education for the interest shown towards the game of golf.

Meanwhile, the promoter of the event, Helene Lancesseur said everything was in place to make the Yaounde tournament a memorable event. The participating countries are namely; Benin, Burkina Faso, Gabon, Ghana, Togo, Senegal, Côte d’Ivoire and Cameroon.

The foreign delegations arrived in Cameroon since Sunday March 15 and the next day, there was a training course and an information meeting between the organising committee and the players. The competition proper started Monday with the open contest. The tournament ends today with the descent of the flags and award of prizes and trophies.
