Some residents of Ntamulung neighbourhood in Bamenda, Friday December 5, passed the night outside with their entire belongings, after Bamenda City Council (BCC) caterpillars descended into the neighbourhood to widen and opened up narrow and new roads in its current drive to decongest some major streets of the town as the end of year festive period approaches.
“We had been notified several times earlier but I didn’t think it was going to be today” one of the displaced residents told Bamenda Online in Pidgin English.
It took the demolition of the first house before several residents realized what the City Council was up to, forcing many of them to start unpacking as the caterpillars worked dangerously close by.
Many had to rush home from work in an effort to rescue some of their belongings.
Meanwhile many others had heeded to the calls of the BCC to demolish their structures and did so on time, sparing themselves of any embarrassment.
The present operation intends to widen the road from Sonac Street through CTI Evening School, to Ntamulung Junction around Afrique Nouvelle, down to Church Centre Junction and up to GBHS Ntamulung Junction in an effort to divert the huge traffic hold up on the main road linking main town Bamenda and Nkwen passing through Sonac Stree-Veterinary Junction to Miss Ngen, and to also des-enclave some parts of Ntamulung.
Similar operations have been carried out in the Old town, Meta Quarter and Back Travelers neighbourhoods, with the City Council authorities moving ahead to tar the roads in Old Town and Meta Quarters.
