Bamenda II raises 3.8M for refugees in far north

Bamenda II Subdivision has joined the national effort in the fight against Boko Haram by raising the sum of 2,808,775 FCFA, at a fund raising that held at the Conference hall of the Bamenda II Sub-divisional office on Wednesday April 29, 2015.

“This is a clear indication that we are all behind the head of state Paul Biya in the fight to eradicate this evil” Mr. Itoe Peter Mbongo, D.O for Bamenda II said.

“I wish to personally congratulate the pupils and students of primary and secondary schools, the civil servants, fons and most especially the Bamenda Main Market traders for coming out powerfully to support government and to show solidarity, patriotism and concern for the forces of law and order and the displaced populations of the North” the D.O said to the representatives of the various delegations who turn up for the fund raising.

In a similar vein, the mayor for Bamenda II, Balick Awah Fedelis, was full of admiration for the pupils and students who sacrificed their pocket money to contribute toward a national course and saw it as a show of great patriotism and the will and readiness to take over the country’s leadership when the time comes.

Speaking on behalf of the traders of the Bamenda Main Market, Nde Fredrick Nifang said “This free will contribution from our members is therefore a clarion call to the Stone Age men that despite the differences and sometimes heated debates between our government and us, we remain a united people especially when our way of life and or our national territory is threatened.”

He added that the effort was for their fellow countrymen and refugees in the Far North Region who have been victims of the war and could not remain indifferent to their plight.

The traders who had started the fund-raising contributed the sum of 1.2 million frs, 570 000frs from eight secondary schools, 500,000 frs from Prof. Ephraim Ngwafor, 451,100 from the basic education family, 140,000 frs from the Divisional office and 100,500 frs from Bamenda II council.

There were also substantial contributions from other services, individuals and villages like agriculture, Essoka Security, Tawah Crisi, Mbatu, Nsongwa, Ntarikon Market traders, Ntarikon Credit Union, with more contributions still expected from the population of Mankon and Chomba and several individuals and businesses in Bamenda II.

For Fon Mungmah III of Mbatu, his people were eager to chip in their widow’s might because when they head of state declared war against Boko Haram, he meant the entire country, and that is why they couldn’t be indifferent.

Immediately after the meeting, the D.O accompanied by security officials crossed over to the regional treasury, a few hundred metres away from the divisional Office where the total amount collected was deposited into the special account set up by the head of state for this purpose.
