Douala II rewards cleanliness

The quarter, Mbam Ewondo and Marche des femmes have been recognized by the municipality during the competition of the most clean quarter and cleanest market in Douala II, last Thursday at the esplanade of the multi-purpose centre of New Bell.

27 districts, 6 youth associations and 4 markets were in competition. After three months of competition, the final results were given in the presence of the prefect of the Wouri, Naseri Paul Bea, the sub-prefect of Douala II, Garba Bakary, Mayor Denise Fallsten, and the entire people.

Mbam Ewondo, which reaped a cheque for one million F is the cleanest district. The palme d'Or for the cleanest merchant space went to Marche des femmes. First place in the associations, went to the youth of "Grand Canyon".

Selection criteria were based on hygiene and safety, clean gutters, the regulatory compliance planning, citizen action, the fight against urban disorder.

To encourage people to join this initiative, the municipality offered participants cleaning equipment (wheelbarrows, shovels, brooms, garbage pails).

The Mayor however deplored the behaviour of certain traders, fouling the borough, and the problem of the sewage disposal.
