FCFA 15m worth of books donated to encourage reading culture

An NGO, SisterShare, recently donated books to some primary schools in Mbven and Nkum Sub-Divisions, in the Northwest Region worth FCFA 15 million.

The English Language text books are intended to inculcate a reading culture in pupils and falls in line with the NGO’s new project titled; “Reading for Empowerment.”

Speaking during the donation ceremony, SisterShare President, Evelyn Jifon, said, apart from donating text books, her organisation has equally awarded scholarships to meritorious students in Kumbo, sponsored orphans in Jakiri Subdivision, donated beds and accessories to Meluf Health Centre in Bui and assisted a homeless family in Yaounde.

“We have provided some 15 primary schools with 1,555 readers and workbooks and 15 cupboards for the storage of the books. We are equally awarding scholarships to some intelligent female pupils. Within a short time; these text books have made English lessons more lively and meaningful. It has also impacted the pupils’ language output,” Jifon said.

She urged parents to educate their children and called on other NGOs to emulate their example.

Jifon lauded the Ministries of Basic and Secondary Education for their support to the project.

Meanwhile, Renata Berinyuy and Ureratu Wirba were offered FCFA 75,000 as scholarship.

Head Teachers were drilled on library management in a bid to empower them to sustainably take care of the books.

The DO of Mbven and the Deputy Mayor of Mbiame both lauded SisterShare and challenged the Mbiame elite to emulate their example. According to them, educating the youth will positively impact the society.
