Fake cosmetic products destroyed in Bamenda

Fake cosmetic products worth millions of FCFA, recently seized during a security crackdown operation in Bamenda have been destroyed by a Commission set up by the SDO for Mezam,Felix Nguele Nguele.

The destruction exercise was carried out on Monday, November 24, at the Bamenda City Council dumping ground and was supervised by the SDO.

After the destruction of the products, the SDOsaid one of the objectives of the administration is to protect its citizens from fake products that can cause health hazards. He added that the fake products fabricated and sold in our markets without authorisation are not only illegal,but pose a danger to the health of the population.

Nguele Nguele called on the population to denounce such counterfeiters and report them to the administration for appropriate measures to be taken.

The Mezam Divisional Delegate for Trade, Wilfred Keng, on his part, situated the operation as part of the activities of his Ministry to cleanse the Cameroonian markets of products with doubtful origin. He said before such products are put in the market, a certificate of conformity and an attestation of sales are needed.

The fake cosmetic products were seized following a tip off from an anonymous source, during a security operation ordered by the SDO. The operation carried out by detachments of the police, gendarmerie and the military in the presence of the representative of the Mezam State Counsel led to the seizure of the products and other suspicious items from the residence of Ernest Emeka Ajuonoma.

The security forces combed the area and discovered huge quantities of counterfeited products in the residence of the suspect. The Products, alongside Emeka were taken to the Bamenda Central Police Station where he was detained and later arraigned before the State Counsel for prosecution.

The destruction of the fake cosmetic products and containers took place in the absence of the suspects Emeka and Njong Jean Smith, though they were immediately granted bail when they were arraigned at the Legal department.
