Sacks of rice and cartons of sugar and cooking oil were donated to faithful in the Douala II Municipality.

Muslim communities in the Douala II Municipality have called on Allah to shower progress, development and peaceful coexistence on all residents. The prayer came as an expression of gratitude following donations of foodstuff to Muslims taking part in fasting for the holy month. Representatives of Muslim communities and associations made the call in New Bell over the weekend.

They received sacks of rice, cartons of sugar and cooking oil. While handing over the donations at the esplanade of the council in New Bell, Mayor Denise Fampou pointed to the fact Muslims in her municipality deserve support in order to carry on with fasting. Some Muslims taking part in the fast are poor and so need assistance in order to pray better.

Mahama Nasirou Isaitou, representative of the Imam of the Anciens Etage Mosque in New Bell, reiterated that the six sacks of rice, five cartons each of sugar and cooking oil donated to 11 Imams of the municipality spoke of the spirit of sharing during Ramadan. The remaining 14 or so days of fasting, he said, will be marked by intensive prayers with a special call for devotion, care and commitment.

As fervent Muslims wake up in the early hours of the morning for a quick bite and sip of water while waiting for the seconds to tick until the call to prayer at sunset, their counterparts in Douala are preparing for the Ramadan Islamic feast that comes up next week. During this month, participating Muslims do not eat or drink during daylight hours. This is because fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam.
