More than 29 shops in the Tiko main market of the South West Region have been burnt to ashes.

The incident occurred on Friday midnight on 22nd December 2014 when fire broke out in one of the shops.According to witnesses, the exact cause of the fire is unknown.

The Fire disaster ravaged more than 29 shops, the most devastating being a provision store stocked with gas bottles and food items.

Four nearby houses were also destroyed by the blaze rendering 21 persons homeless.

It was a difficult piece to swallow particularly to two victims whose shops were heavily equipped after heavy purchase from Douala in view of Christmas sales. One of the victims said he took a loan for the new purchase in order to take advantage of the quick turnover during Christmas season.

The Divisional officer for Tiko, Che Ngwashi, in the company of the Mayor and some law enforcement officials visited the scene of the fire incident to have a first-hand appraisal of the situation. He later held a meeting with all the victims involved.

It is not the first time such a petrifying incident is occurring in the Tiko main Market. The last time the market caught fire was in 2010 where more than 700 shops were burnt down.
