Mayors of the three SDF Sub Divisional Councils in Kumba who were overwhelmingly voted into office some seven months ago are holding their heads high up contrary to the wishes of their CPDM opponents and sinister ploys to starve them of funds. Their development drive is already having an impact on the population. Their agenda for this long vacation is to push the entire Kumba central constituency into soccer for students on holidays to benefit from a big financial package provided by the councils.

The three Mayors, Ebako Abel Ndoh of Kumba I, Forcha Martin of Kumba II, and John Kona Makia of Kumba III, are busy making final touches to dish out FCFA 2million for a holiday football tournament in their respective municipalities.

Apart from this, the Mayors have offered in the various council areas 120 holiday jobs to holiday makers. It is expected that by the end of the about one month exercise, each student will go back home with about FCFA 25000.

The Mayor of Kumba I has provided FCFA 500.000 for the tournament in his municipality, involving 8 teams, and that all the teams that will play the finals will automatically qualify for the ”mini interpool” that will involved six teams, two from each municipality.

He has also recruited 40 students for the holiday jobs; he equally plans to carry out the second phase if the means are available since the first phase is spread over 3 weeks.

Asked what the holidaymakers will be doing as their job description with just 4 hours to put in daily, the Mayor opined that there is just much to do in the municipality. “Improving on the hygiene and sanitation condition of the town is just one”, he said.

This same opinion is what the other Mayors shared, adding that it is the responsibility of the council to organise sports tournaments and provide holiday jobs to the students in the area, so as to occupy them and avoid them from involving in cruel activities like drug abuse and other ills which will increase the level of criminality in the town.

However, there are fears that this twist in the action of the Mayors might see their relationship with the City Council take a different dimension and as it might be seen as a challenge.
