Dr. Tseuko Dorine, a specialist in Clinical Biology at the Limbe Regional Hospital has said that, the Blood Bank of the Hospital is practically empty.

This revelation was made during a meeting she had with the blood donors association last Saturday, June 14 in the Regional Hospital premise.

Dr. Tseuko Dorine told members of the Blood Donors’ Association that the meeting was intended at coming up with actions to commemorate the celebration of World Donors’ Day, which took place on Sunday June 14.

The commemoration was placed under the theme ‘Donate Blood to Save Lives’, and included activities such as a sports walk and voluntary donation of blood.

Dr. Tseuko Dorine told THE SUN on June 14 that, “Donation of blood will be carried out in the Regional Hospital from June 14 to July 15”.

She reiterated that the activities would be taken very seriously and urged members to help to sensitise inhabitants to donate blood freely so as to increase the amount of blood in the blood stock and as such help to save lives.

The impact was felt during last Sunday’s commemoration as there was a massive turnout of blood donors following a street campaign with a Mobile Van last Saturday 13 June.

Dry blood bank

“The blood bank of the Regional Hospital can contain about 50 pints of blood but for now the bank is empty” the specialists said.

Meanwhile, Ajefu Evaristus, an active blood donor and a member of the Blood Donors’ Association, encouraged more persons to connect with the association and confirmed that, joining it comes with a lot of payback which include donors becoming automatic partners with the Regional Hospital, regular check up as compensation for regular donation, the registration into the BEFPHA health scheme, after donation of blood three consecutive times, which will guarantee 70% reduction of medical bills.

“The regular donation of blood does not only keep us healthy but also help to save lives” he opined.

On his part, Ndive Peter, adviser to the Blood Donors’ Association, pleaded on the government to take Blood Donors very seriously and recognise them by providing them with Blood Donor cards.

In her closing remark, Dr. Tseuko Dorine said the Blood Donors’ Association is a new one but will gradually integrate itself into the National Body that is already in existence.

Corroborating the Adviser of the association, she said, she is also of the opinion that the Ministry of Health should to take the association more seriously.
