Militants of the Social Democratic Front, SDF, Limbe, were all in black as they participated in the 50th-anniversary march past in Limbe on February 11.
The Victoria (Limbe) SDF Electoral District Chairman, Godden Zama, said their unusual outing in black was to show their sympathy to all those youths within the Cameroonian armed forces, the other youthful civilian and the young ones who have died in the fight against the Boko Haram.
He said their own way of celebrating the 50th anniversary was not to go merry- making but to mourn for all the thousands of lives Cameroon has lost in the war in the north of the country fighting to wipe out the Boko Haram terrorists.
The SDO of Fako, Zang III, expressed satisfaction with all the schools, political party youths and professional youth groupings that turned out to take part in this year’s event.“I am very satisfied with the turn out and participation of everybody in this 50th anniversary of our National Youth Day. And I will want to call on the youths to ensure that they follow the Head of State’s message that was addressed to them.”
The SDO went on to thank all those who had worked hard to make the celebrations a success, especially the companies that chipped in financial assistance, such as; SONARA, CDC and the Limbe City Council, among others.
The Youth Day celebrations in Limbe commenced with a rebroadcast of the Head of State’s message. While acknowledging that one of the main problems of the youths is that of unemployment, he, nevertheless chastised some of these same job-hungry youths who, he said, soon after getting enrolled on the Government payroll as civil servants, abandon work but continue to receive monthly salaries from the State.
Many pundits, however, blame some Government agents at the level of the Finance Ministry for cronyism. They hold that the ease with which ‘ghost workers’ or salary earners from the State continue unabated is because there are insiders who keep nurturing it for their own selfish ends. Otherwise, the vice would have long been exterminated given that the Government, yearly, carries out a civil servant census.
Besides, there are also some watchdog agencies of the State such as CONAC and so on, whose role is to checkmate those who are ever ready to defraud the State.
