Ahead of the crucial Bar Council elections scheduled to take place at the Cameroon Red Cross Hall in Yaounde on January 31, 2015, Lawyers in Meme Division under the canopy of Meme Lawyers Association, MELA, have taken an oath to stand behind their candidate vying for the Bar Council, Barrister Nzoh Mbokeh Divine, by being present in Yaounde on D-Day and voting him massively.
The Lawyers made the commitment on Friday January 23, 2015, on the occasion of the campaign launch of Barrister Mbokeh that brought about 100 MELA members.
Addressing the gathering of the legal profession, the president of MELA, Barrister Awutah Philip Atubah made it clear that time has come for Meme Lawyers not to make a mistake by taking the candidature of their candidate lightly.
He narrated that MELA should be united more than ever to inundate the Bar General Assembly in Yaounde with one spirit and vote for their ‘brother and colleague, Barrister Mbokeh whom he described as a square peg in square hole.
He said ‘united we stand and divide we collapse, thus we should take into consideration that, we have an assignment, which is that of going to Yaoundé and returning with victory’.
He narrated that though Barrister Mbokeh is seeking another mandate as Bar Council member after having been elected in 2012, MELA members shouldn’t take it that victory is a foregone conclusion because no election resembles the other and just a vote for, can turn the tables positively.
On the level of preparedness, MELA’s president opined that all the necessary logistics have been put in place to ensure that members are comfortable in Yaounde. Barrister Eyambe Ebai, head of the Eyambe Ebai Law Chambers, on his part described MELA’s candidate as a legal icon. He maintained that the profile of Barrister Nzoh Mbokeh is so rich and matured that voting him is just to ensure that he uses his magnificent professional experience to bring many more goodies for MELA.
Barrister Eyambe observed that though Barrister Mbokeh is an incumbent Bar Council member having served as Assistant Secretary General of the Bar and the Special Representative of the Bar President for Meme, Manyu and Lebialem, MELA members should take it as a responsibility to give him another chance to serve the Council.
Barrister Eyambe was corroborated by Barristers Enu Patrick, Etape Linus, Teku Collins and Barrister Meloko MELA’s Scribe, respectively who added that he worked together with his peers at the council with the incumbent Bartonnier Barrister Sama Francis and fought for the launching of the Bar exams after about five years.
On his part, Barrister Mbokeh with about 15 years standing at the Bar, accepted that ‘l’heure est grave’, and placed his campaign slogan under ‘we are one’.
He thanked MELA for the endorsement and promised to work for the interest of the Cameroon Bar as he has always done before even as Special Representative of the Bar when Barrister Eta Besong was Batonnier and more over when he served as MELA’s president years back. Barrister Mbokeh observed that he is a child of the universe and don’t work in an island.
While acknowledging the fact that uneasy is the head that wears the crown, he qualified his bid for the Bar council for the second mandate as a MELA issue not his.
He hinted that if MELA wasn’t behind him, he won’t have nursed the intention to bid for the Bar Council the second time.
