His Excellency Hadiza Mustapha on Monday, June 22, 2015, handed over to government renovated classrooms in Ovangoul near Ngoumou in the Centre Region.
The Nigerian High Commissioner to Cameroon, His Excellency Hadiza Mustapha, on Monday June 21, 2015, handed over to government three renovated classrooms of Government Primary School, Ovangoul near Ngoumou in the Mefou and Akono Division of the Centre Region.
The event took place in the presence of officials of the Centre Region, the Mefou and Akono Division, the elite of Mefou and Akono Division and other dignitaries.
The Minister of Basic Education, Youssouf Hadidja Alim, was on hand to ‘receive’ the classrooms in the presence of MTN Foundation officials which also contributed to the project. The three classrooms were constructed in partnership with the “Association des Filles et Femmes de l’Adamaoua” (AFFADA).
The project is part of the Nigerian High Commission’s “Charity Programme 2014.” Speaking at the occasion, Youssouf Hadidja Alim hailed the Nigerian High Commission and partners for improving the learning conditions of children in Ovangoul.
She called on the teachers and the pupils of G.S. Ovangoul to handle the infrastructure with care for the benefit of future generations. Earlier, His Excellency Hadiza Mustapha said the gesture was the wish by the Nigerian community in Cameroon to reciprocate the hospitality they have been enjoying.
She disclosed that the school is one of four projects shortlisted by the High Commission in 2014 and that the second is being executed. The Embassy donated relief material to Nigerian refugees in Minawao in the Far North Region in November 2014.
Created in 1969, Government School Ovangoul has had a considerable drop in the number of pupils in the past eight years due to bad weather that destroyed three classrooms, keeping them out of use.
Meanwhile, MTN Foundation offered 60 benches to the school for the comfort of the young learners and to ensure their academic success; to add to the renovated classrooms. With the donation, it is hoped that enrolment will significantly increase from the 100 this year.
