Ten orphans who are students of Government Bilingual High School Kikaikom on October 1, received a scholarship of FCFA 25,000 each from their former Vice Principal, Jean Pierre Chuta, now based in the United States of America.
According to the Principal of the school, Oliver Wirngo Singeh, Chuta taught with him as Vice Principal for the 2010/2011 academic year before going abroad.
He revealed that when Chuta visited the school last year, he distributed a pen and an HB pencil to each of the 300 students who wrote the GCE Examination and promised that the exercise would continue every year. He said it was during their discussion that the idea of scholarships to orphans was conceived.
The ceremony was witnessed by the Parent Teacher Association, PTA executive, guardians of the orphans and the school administration.
Presenting the scholarship awards, Wirngo said that Chuta has indicated that, after the scholarships of FCFA 25,000 each offered to the 10 orphans, he will, with effect from next year, be awarding the scholarships to five orphans every year. Chuta was quoted as saying: “We are really touched and by God’s grace we shall help those children as far as we can.”
The 10 orphan students: Shanceline Moye, Lesly Ngarka, Anmarie Nyuykonge, Eunice Lieyla, Fredoline Banboye, Sedrick Fon Berinyuy, Shavline Kale, Doris Asherinyuy, Susan Shiyntum and Renata Kongran, were chosen from Form 1 - 4.
Doris Asherinyuy and Sedrick Fon Berinyuy, who spoke on behalf of the laureates, thanked Chuta and Wirngo for the scholarships which will enable them to continue with their studies uninterrupted. They promised to continue to work hard in order to pass their examinations and merit more scholarships. They prayed God to replenish the source of the scholarship so that more orphans would be educated.
The principal of GBHS Kikaikom in his reaction said he was a happy recipient of such a wonderful gesture to the underprivileged students in his institution. He said he will remain indebted to his friend , Chuta, while stating that the school has a huge number of 50-60 orphans and that the selection was done through studies carried out.
Wirngo urged the orphans to know that they are equal to other children and even better. He appreciated the Government scholarships of excellence and those scholarships given by Banin Group in Bamenda and Chalice Foundation Kumbo to the orphans.
