Police confront Custom officers over bribe

A Police Officer in Sabongari, Donga-Mantung Division of the Northwest Region, has accused Customs officials at the Sabongari Post for using the closed-border situation with Nigeria to line their pockets.

It should be recalled that, following the Ebola outbreak in Nigeria, the Government of Cameroon instructed that all borders with Nigeria be closed.

According to the Police Officer, after the closure of the borders, a lot of goods from Nigeria, especially fuel, were still being smuggled into Cameroon through Sabongari.

The Police Officer said the Customs officials were busy lining their pockets, but deceiving Government that the borders were still closed.

“I am not interested in how much they pocketed, but I am concerned about my reputation, because when these shady deals would be unveiled, it will tarnish my reputation. So I only advised them to desist from it, or I will report to hierarchy.”
