Road rehabilitation in Douala : families demand compensation

Road rehabilitation in Douala is not without consequence. Four families who were considered forcompensation following the demolition of their homes in 2013 were never indemnified.

These families whose homes at the Bonaloka and Bonadiwoto neighbourhoods were destroyed following the rehabilitation of the roads entering Douala on the eastside of the city are demanding compensation. To begin with, they took the matter to the Cameroon Network of Human Rights Organization, CNHRO, which studied and came up with a final report presented in Douala March 17.

During a press briefing in Akwa March 17, CNHRO Coordinator for the Littoral, Patricia Ndjandjo, said even though the victims had filed complaints to some international bodies, it was necessary to study the situation to have clear picture of the human rights situation. In a highlights of the report carried out between 214 and 2015, she said although some 420 victims were concerned in the crackdown, some received their indemnities but these four were denied their rights.

The report shows that the four families were not included among those to be demolished. But the plan of the company carrying out the rehabilitation had included their homes for destruction. It is based on this confusion that they families were not indemnified. Some who were considered indemnified received only as minimal as FCFA 300,000 for both homes and other real estate worth several millions. She said her association will use the report in view of facilitating the recovery of their rights.
