US Amb. donates FCFA 1.5m to Rom-Nwa water project

The Rom Development and Cultural Association, ROMDECA, in Nwa Subdivision of Donga Mantung Division of the Northwest Region, on September 17, received the 2014 US Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Funding, SSH, for its Project titled “Rom Community Water Catchment Protection Project”.

The amount is to help protect the water catchment in Rom. This was disclosed during the launching ceremony and workshop organised on September 17 at the multi-purpose Hall of US Embassy in Yaounde, for all the grantees of this year’s awards drawn from five out of the 10 Regions of Cameroon with six projects in all.

The Deputy Chief of Missions at the US Embassy, Gregory Thome, presided at the ceremony and was assisted by Nancy Schmidt Jones, the Self Help Coordinator and Elizabeth A. Ehabe, the Self–Help Administrator of the US Embassy in Yaounde.

The Chairman of the Rom Community Water Catchment Protection Project, ROMDECA, Job Nyanganji Indi, told The Post after the event that he appreciated the US Embassy for the gesture which will go a long way to solve the perennial water problems in Rom Village in Nwa.

Nyanganji said it was at this forum in Yaounde that they learnt that the US Ambassador’s Special Self-Help Fund, SSH, since 1983, has been providing small-scale assistance to Cameroonian Communities as part of the US Government’s commitment to support development projects and improve the living conditions of the masses.

“The projects funded this year are six in number, drawn from five regions, targeting 41,591 beneficiaries with a total sum of US 50,000 Dollars, about FCFA 25 million,” Nyanganji remarked.

Other projects in the second category that were equally launched included the Julia TAFT- Refugee Fund and another in the East Region, whose focus is to identify gaps in primary school education - offering tutoring courses for students and support integration for refugee children.

The Rom Water Project shall be executed in collaboration with an NGO known as United for Earth Cameroon, UNEC, based in Ndu, Donga Mantung Division. The ROMDECA-US water project protocol signing was witnessed by the Chairman of the Rom Water Project, Henry Kufort and the Yaounde Honorary President of ROMDECA, Shadrack Nyanganji.
