The political landscape of the South West Region has not experienced any dramatic transformation as far as the control of councils is concerned. But unlike in 2007 when the ruling CPDM party lorded it over 29 out of the 31 councils in the Region, the story is different from a tutored analysis of results proclaimed from the September 30 polls.
The leading opposition Social Democratic Front (SDF) of Ni John Fru Ndi has made impressive gains and conquered new areas though the CPDM still occupies the lion's share. In Fako, according to information gathered from the ELECAM South West Regional Delegation, the Limbe I, II and III councils as well as Muyuka, Idenau and Buea have been swept by the CPDM with an absolute majority. The SDF also recorded an overwhelming victory in Tiko beating the CPDM and NUDP. Meanwhile, the CPDM out powered Ayah Paul's PAP in Mamfe and consolidated its grip in Tinto and Eyumojock.
In Lebialem Division, the story is the same with the CPDM domineering over the SDF, PAP and NUDP parties that ran for the three councils in Menji, Alou and Wabane. The greatest strides of the SDF were in Meme Division where the party retained the Kumba II Council and battled hard to unseat the CPDM in Kumba I and III.
According to information from ELECAM, the CPDM has won all the three councils of Nguti, Bangem and Tombel in Kupe-Muanenguba Division. The party has also won all the nine councils in Ndian Division (Mundemba, Ekondo Titi, Isangele, Dikoume Balue, Toko, Bamusso, Kombo Abedimo, Kombo Itindi and Idabato). The CPDM has reconquered the Toko Council which it lost to the SDF in 2007.
