Religious leaders from different denominations in Cameroon met in Mvolye, Yaounde to pray for peace. It was an international gathering for peace organised by the Sant’Egidio religious community on the theme “Peace is the Future”.
The inter-religious meeting organised in Yaounde comes on the heels of a call by Pope Francis urging religious leaders not to remain indifferent to the pains and suffering of the people in war-torn countries.
According to Missionary Christian Mukete Ngoh, “the inter-religious gathering is opportune as the world is experiencing war and prayer seems to be the ultimate solution”.
The legendry peace in Cameroon is threatened at the moment by conflict especially in the northern regions, he added.
Cheikh Oumarou Malam, president of High Islamic Council in Cameroon, called on Allah; the only mediator of war when all other solutions have failed to restored peace and reconciliation.
At the end of the meeting, all the religious leaders agreed that war is not a solution to injustice but rather leads to a spiral of violence whose undesirable effects are difficult to control.
