Both Cameroon and Ecuador are in their first participation in the tournament and aiming to create sensation by clinching a spot for the second round.

The Lionesses spent time in Canada training and playing friendly matches against colleges and local Canadian selections in preparation for the tournament. During this time, they were paid a visit by former Indomitable Lion, Patrick Mboma who urged them to make history by performing well in the competition.

The president of the feminine football commission, Celine Eko, also arrived in Canada just in time for the Lionesses to officially take up residence in Vancouver after leaving Surrey city where they had been training.

The qualification bonus stands at FCFA 15 million while the bonus for matches won range from three to fifteen million depending how far the Lionesses go into the competition. On the opening day of the competition, host Canada beat China 1-0 while the Netherlands narrowly edged New Zealand on an identical 1-0 score.
