The second phase of the MTN Elite Two Championship resumed over the weekend with Fovu of Baham taking the lead in the battle for ascension into division one. They beat their immediate challenger, Tonnerre to widen their leadership margin at the helm of the classification table, with 31 points. Despite the defeat, Tonnerre conserved the runner-up position with 28 points, followed by Douala Athletics Club and Botafogo in the third and fourth positions respectively.
While the battle for ascension to the Elite One championship hits a higher gear at the top of the table, the battle is of a different kind at the bottom of the table where Caiman, Lausanne and Santos in the 12th, 13th and 14th positions respectively are fighting relegation to the regional league.
However, it is too early to say which team will ascend to division one and which will be relegated as the margin between the leading quartet and the last trio is just five points. With thirteen matches to the end of the championship, anything could happen along the way.
In a related development, the president of Tonnerre football club, Onambele Zibi, has criticised some Professional League officials for fomenting trouble in the club so as deprive the club from ascending to the elite one championship. He promised serious sanctions against any player who allows himself to be manipulated. In made the warning during a press conference last Thursday during which as president of the temporary management committee of first and second division clubs, he extended the gratitude of the club presidents to the Head of State, Paul Biya, for approving the award of 560 million to clubs to jump start the Professional League football in Cameroon.
