Indomitable Lions on strike

This exact day 24 years ago Cameroon proved that African football was alive and well by beating World Cup holders Argentina at Italia 90 1-0.

Last week they showed that the rumours of their demise have been greatly exaggerated, by holding Germany to a 2-2 draw in Monchengladbach.

So fans of the Indomitable Lions should be very excited ahead of the tournament this summer, but the players have thrown a fly in the ointment.

They have essentially gone on strike, and refused to leave on the chartered plane for Brazil scheduled to leave today.

In an incredible set of circumstances the African nation have not boarded the plane and are currently still in Cameroon ahead of the beginning of the tournament this week.

They are embroiled in an ongoing feud with the national association over bonus payments and have decided to take drastic action in order to make their point.

It means the likes of former Chelsea star Samuel Eto'o, Arsenal's former midfield enforcer Alex Song and Premier League players old and new such as Charles Itandje, Benoit Assou-Ekotto, Jean Makoun, Stephane M'Bia and Eyong Enoh are in jeopardy of missing the competition entirely.

it is even reported the players refused to raise the Cameroonian flag before their friendly against Moldova yesterday - from which Eto'o was absent, officially 'sick', but the rumour mill suggests otherwise.

It is not yet known if the team are ready to boycott the tournament entirely.

If they did it would likely leave Mexico, Brazil and Croatia in a three-team group or perhaps give Tunisia, the team they beat to reach Brazil, a reprieve. Will Cameroon go through with their boycott?
