Chelsea star Samuel Eto'o may not be out of the World Cup after all, as Cameroon manager Volke Finke, insists, "We have to wait" on his captains fitness.

Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o may not be out of the World Cup despite claims suggesting the Chelsea front-man has been ruled out through injury.

The Cameroon captain could not help his side slip to a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Mexico in their first round game of the group-stages.

Eto'o had a golden chance to draw the African side level, but his effort crashed against the post.

Eto'o was said to have antagonised a knee injury which he sustained at the end of last season with Premier League side Chelsea.

The 33-year-old was expected to be out of the World Cup, but Cameroon manager, Volke Finke has given the African nation hope yet, "It's the same, he will need treatment".

Finke and his staff will want their formidable striker to be on top form and at full-fitness, Eto'o' is a priority for them as the prepare to face Croatia in their next match on June 18.

Finke added, "It's an injury which is a little bit difficult, but I'm not sure if he can or can't play, we have to wait, so we will see".

Whilst Finke is keeping his cards close to his chest, the manager sounds positive that Eto'o can recover in time and will still have a big part to play in Cameroon's World Cup campaign.

Eto'o's fitness is a huge concern for Cameroon who struggled to conjure much of an attacking performance against Mexico, they will need to show they can deliver in their vital game against Croatia on Wednesday.
