Bafana coach Shakes Mashaba
Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Darren Keet has an idea what type of football Cameroon's new Belgian coach Hugo Broos is going to play when they meet in a 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) Group M qualifier in Limbe on Saturday.
The Belgium-based Keet is back for the first time since making an error at the Afcon finals last year and comes with useful information that might help Bafana in their must-win tie against the Indomitable Lions, who lead the group.
Bafana are bottom of the group on one point after two matches, desperately needing a victory at Stade Municipal de Limbe on Saturday (4.30pm SA time) to stay in the race to qualify for the biennial tournament.
"I know a little about him [Broos] from when he was in Belgium. Most coaches from Belgium are quite defensive. They like to have a tactical plan and they like to play on the counterattack, which is what I am expecting from them," said Keet after Bafana's morning training session yesterday.
"They've got a few good players and one player [Sebastien Siani] plays with Andile Jali at Oostende. We have to plan ahead. We have to go to Cameroon and win."
Keet, who is the number one goalkeeper at KV Kortrijk, feels he should have been given a chance to prove himself again after his error against Algeria at last year's Afcon, but has no grudges about being left out of the team for more than a year since then.
"I was disappointed immediately after the game against Algeria. I think I had a decent game, except in the second half when they scored the three goals.
"To be left out of the next game [against Senegal] was disappointing because I felt that's when it would have been good to continue playing and [to] play after Afcon as well. But you just have to wait for your chance. Being back in the team shows that he [coach Shakes Mashaba] keeps faith in me."
Bafana had two training sessions at the University of Johannesburg in Soweto yesterday. Platinum Stars striker Ndumiso Mabena, who has replaced the injured Dino Ndlovu, joined the team in training.
