The 2016 edition of the Cameroun Open Championship ended recently in Yaoundé, Cameroon with Nigeria’s number one, Andrew Oche Odo, placing 3rd and missed the top prize money of $10,000.
Odoh, who was the defending champion, played +4 to relinquish the title he won in December 2015 to a Cameroonian professional, Nji Prisli, who played 3 under.
Placing third, however, fetched Odoh $3000 and said that he was grateful as the championship was competitive.
“I’m grateful I have something to tell. All the players were at their best in swings, putting and shots,” Odoh said.
On losing the title to a Cameroonian (Prisli) he said, “I have won the tournament twice and by that record, I was the man to beat in the championship. In any game, you win some and lose some.”
However, Nigerian Gift Willy, placed second by beating Odoh by one shot (+3) to pocket $5000 prize money; Ebela Desire of Cameroun was 4th with +8 to take home $1500, while another Nigerian professional, Martin Odoh and brother of Oche Odoh grabbed $1000 for the 5th position with +10.
Gift on his part commended the Nigerian professionals adding, “The Cameroun Open was almost becoming a Nigerian affair. Nigerian professionals are always among the top players in every edition and that is a good development.”
