Cameroon has just adopted a national Programme of outreach and education on the environment (Peles). The document was produced and adopted at the end of a workshop held in Yaoundé on October 8, 2014.

It discussed among other things, regional and sectoral action plans for activities including awareness actions, education, information and training on environmental issues.

Considering the rate of urbanization which increases each year (55% in 2014) in Cameroon, there has also been an increase in household consumption and release of harmful waste into the environment. This is what has prompted the Cameroonian authorities to put in place measures to solve the problem.

Cameroon intends to make this document which will be in force during the next five years, its compass for awareness of environmental protection behaviours. It is also to create environmental awareness among the people.

For the Cameroonian Minister of environment, nature Protection and sustainable development, Pierre Hele: "this is to change the meaning of the preservation of the natural heritage and the improvement of the quality of life of the people.
