Bureau of Immigration operatives has arrested at least 50 foreigners working illegally at a call center in Makati City in the Philippines.
Many of the foreigners were at their posts when the BI intelligence group team raided the call center, GMA News' John Consulta reported on GMA News TV's "News to Go." The foreigners allegedly had no working documents. They reportedly got salaries of P30,000 to P60,000 a month.
An investigation showed they were recruited to cater to French-speaking countries as they can speak French fluently. Most of the foreigners reportedly came from Cameroon, Ivory Coast and Mauritius.
But the report said the foreigners insisted they had the proper documents, and that they were working legally. Still, the BI's initial findings indicated the foreigners are tourists and cannot work here.
The foreigners were brought to the BI headquarters for verification. If they are found to have no working permits, they may be subject to deportation procedures. The BI is also checking if the foreign nationals have criminal records.
