Five Cameroonian movies screened at Yarha film festival

The Yarha 2014 international week of First Films has ended in Yaoundé with the screening of 23 movies from Cameroonian and foreign producers.

The movie produced by the matron of the film festival, Fatou N’Diay, “un dimache a Kigali” marked the highlight of the closing ceremony.

The movie shares the hope and disillusion of the main character, Bernard Valcourt who travelled to the capital of Rwanda in 1994 to shot a documentary on HIV/AIDS, when inter-ethnic tension broke out between the Hutus and the Tutsis.

During his stay at hotel Mille Collines, the residential quarters for expatriates, Valcourt fell in love with a Rwandan waiter, Gentille, whom he left behind following a swift repatriation as the war escalated.

He only returned later to a desolate irreparable situation at the end of the massacres. The emotion packed love tragedy close of the weeklong event that also saw the screening of five by Cameroonians films.

According the one the main organizers, Syvie Nwet the festival provides an ideal forum for beginners to upgrade their skills and compete with filmmakers from around the world. She noted that only the best films from budding producers were projected at the festival ground at the French Institute in Yaoundé.

The shortlisted Cameroonian filmmakers also took part in a training prgramme on the techniques of producing world class movies on the sidelines of the festival. At the close of the training they are expected to produce a film within seven days.

The Minister of Labour and Social security, Gregoire Owona chaired the closing the Yarha 2014 international week of First Films which is in its first edition.
