Cameroonian fashion designer Kibonen Nfi showcase her "Multifariuos" SS2015 collection for the very first time at the coverted Art Institute New York Mercedes Benz Fashion Week yesterday Sept. 9 in the Theatres at Lincoln Center.
This makes her the first ever Cameroonian designer to showcase a collection at the prestigious fashion event and it comes at the heels of a rigorous audition process organized by the Art Institutes of NYC. She came a top of 60 other designers.
To support her record breaking moment, NBA star and fellow Cameroonian, Luc Mbah A Moute attended the event.
Both met back at the NYU Africa Economic Forum back in 2014 and became friends. Luc is convinced that supporting rising talents is a key to ensuring a more sustainable community.
Kibonen's new “Multifarious” collection, goes through the representation of rural and royal scenes in a way that can be consumed in the comforts of our daily luxurious lives.
She uses bright colored authentic African prints as well as creating her own textile designs.
She is best known for her use of the "Toghu", also known as the “royal regalia” worn by the Tikar people of the Bamileke and Bamenda regions of Cameroon, West Africa.
This has been her core signature, blending these traditional prints and symbols with more modern silhouettes and contemporary designs.
