If there is a Cameroonian singer much loved and unanimously supported by the guards of Makossa music, it is Serge Mpollo aka Sergio Polo. Popularly referred to as Historian, Roi Polo XVIII and le President d’Deido a Paris.
Sergio Polo was born on November 14, 1970 in Deido, Douala. As a rare product of Douala’s “street musical” called cabaret, he started singing in college before releasing his first album with his long-time friend Njohreur in 1996 titled le mari d’autrui – another woman’s husband.
Since then, Sergio Polo has released several successful albums with beautiful songs that have earned him domestic and international awards, support, love; and prestige.Some of these include; le mari d’autrui, carton rough, Géorgie, la chicotte de papa, cocktail, on est ensemble and amour a deux and amour a vie.
Cameroon Concord’s Canada Bureau Chief Takang Gabriel reported that while on an international tour in Toronto, Montreal and Vancouver, Sergio Polo was invited On September 6, 2014 at the Toronto Plaza Hotel to animate during the launching of African Vision Arts Canada (AVAC). Founded by Prosper Agbor Ndakaw (the Managing Director of Double Diamond Health Care Services, Toronto) and friends, AVAC is a Non-profit-making organization that aims at promoting the African cultural heritage in Canada through award ceremonies, fashion shows, pageants and festivals.
The African community in Canada has embraced AVAC with the hands of a first-time baby mum. However, the organizers are yet to effectively articulate the necessity and impact of such a brilliant initiative on the host community.
Although AVAC organizers have promised to touch the hearts of African organizations, it is in history that Cameroonian organizations in the diaspora are characterized by in-fighting, greed, mismanagement of funds and lack of public accountability.
