Eight iconic movies have been shortlisted for free projection at the Douala French Institute.
Film lovers in the economic capital will embark on a discovery of the Indian society, landscape, politics, culture and traditions amongst others, through a variety of movies to satisfy their quest. In line with celebrations marking 100 years of Indian cinema, the Honorary Consulate General of India to Cameroon in collaboration with the Douala French Institute, is projecting eight carefully selected Indian movies from September 25 to December 11.
The first of these "Taare Zameen Par / Every Child is Special" was presented to the public last Wednesday September 25 at the theatre hall of the French Institute. The next film, "Jodhaa Akkbar," a 170-minute biography will be on Saturday October 5 at 7pm. It is set in the 16th Century when India was under the dynasty of Muslim Emperors. Another shortlisted movie slated for Friday October 18 at 7pm is a 190-minute biography titled "Gandhi," released in 1983. It retraces the life and career of Gandhi, who advocated for non-violence in obtaining India's independence.
Others movies include "Sholay," a comedy launched in 2005, programmed for Saturday October 19 at 7pm. The 160-minute long adventure is dubbed "Le Western Curry made in India" recounting the story of two thieves and a police officer. Meanwhile in "Koi...Mil Gaya" to be projected on Saturday November 16 at 7:30pm, the audience will discover a drama science fiction that recounts the experience of a "mentally retarded" man who became friends with an alien he met in a jungle.
On Saturday November 23, a drama piece comprising both comedy and romance will entertain spectators for 160 minutes. Released in 2001, "Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham" will be aired as from 7:30pm. It narrates the life of a typical Indian family, who brought up their children in strict respect to Indian traditional values. However, one of their sons, Rahul falls in love with Anjali, a girl from Delhi.
In "My Name is Khan" scheduled for Wednesday December 4 at 7:30 pm, the audience will be led in a journey through the life of Rizvan from Mumbai in India to San Francisco in the US. The last movie, slated for Wednesday December 11 at 7:30pm titled "Aaja Nachle, a musical piece released in 2007.
