Somebody Reading Braille
In Yaounde, commemorative activities are on-going at the Club of Rehabilitated Blind Youths in Cameroon.
The Club President, Bertin Soso explained that highlights of the commemoration shall be on sensitising the public on the needs of the visually impaired. One of the most urgent need is having access to the Braille.
This explains why the Club of Rehabilitated Blind Youths in Cameroon focused its activities on media campaigns, press conferences and discussions with national and international partners.
The World Braille Day is a day commemorating the birthday of Frenchman, Louis Braille the inventor of the Braille language.
Louis Braille lost his vision at three after an accident and in his determination to cope in school, he invented the Braille at the age of 15 years.
His invention enabled blind people to read and write.
The Braille surpassed the existing Hauy System which the blind used only for reading and not writing.
Every 4th January therefore, Non Governmental Organisations and other institutions come together to raise awareness about the apathy towards blind people and explore avenues for their total intergration in society.
