Muyuka District Hospital recently received some medical equipment donated by Senator Peter Mefany Musonge.
The medical equipment, which includes 10 hospital beds, 12 stainless steel drip stands on wheels, and 12 bedside cupboards, one monocular electric microscope with four objectives, one simple delivery kit and one digital fertile dabbler, will serve in the delivery and emergency health care units of the Hospital.
Senator Musonge was warmly welcomed by the Hospital staff and the population of Muyuka that turned out six months after some Muyuka elite resident in the USA supported the Hospital with a 40-feet container of varied hospital equipment and consumables.
“I thank you all for having welcomed me in your midst, we started in Limbe, Buea and, today, we are here.The government has invested a lot in the Southwest Region health districts,” the Senator said.
The Mayor of Muyuka Council, Michael Nkeng, described the donation as sunshine to the Muyuka population.
Southwest Regional Delegate of Public Health Dr. Victor Njie Mbome thanked Sen. Musonge for the gifts, which will improve quality services to the population, especially at a time when there is an increase in consultation.
“I will, in collaboration with the hospital staff, work as a team to ensure the proper management of this equipment and deliver quality services to Muyuka people and beyond,” Dr. Mbome said.
The Director of the Hospital, Dr.Joseph Bah,saidthe equipment came at a time where thereisdire need of it and if more hands are put on deck, the hospital will become a referral hospital.
The hospital, in the past years, hasrealised the following: a fence round it, two main offices, a standby generator, tiling of the floors, refrigerators, modern laboratory equipment, a new echography machine, new air conditions, creation of an equipped intensive care unit and recovery room with modern monitors and beds;all with revenue generated by the hospital.
The Government, last year, constructed an ultra-modern block that now functions as paediatric and maternity/delivery ward. Thehospital serves 3,380 inhabitants of the Muyuka and nearby districts like Buea, Mbonge and even beyond Southwest Region.
The major health problems includes:malaria, HIV/AIDS, high blood pressure, road traffic accidents and many others. Consultation increased from 12,729 in 2014 to 15,429 in 2015, malaria cases reduced from 7,704 to 6,231 in 2015.
Meantime, HIV/AIDS remains a big challenge increasing from 396 to 495 in 2015, road traffic accidents from 108 to 138 in 2015, delivery from 499 to 528 in 2015, and admission from 3,566 to 3,676 in 2015.
Major drawbacks in the hospital include: old buildings needing renovation, insufficient funds to pay the staff, insufficient number of staff, lack of an ambulance for fast transfer of referred cases, old beds and torn mattresses, lack of X-Ray unit and a theatre for surgical cases.
The Director said the Hospital, in 2012, had only two doctors, but, today, they are blessed with five doctors. The Hospital was built in the early 60s as a health centre, later called Muyuka Subdivisional Hospital and then to a District Hospital in 1995.
