UB graduates 67 medical doctors

The Minister of Higher Education presided at the colourful convocation ceremony on July 5, 2014.

67 young Medical Doctors, among whom 25 women, last July 5, 2014 graduated from the University of Buea (UB) as the second batch behind the pioneers who graduated in December 2012. Alongside the General Medical Practitioners were 35 Senior Nurses (BNS) and 26 Senior Medical Laboratory Scientists (BMLS).

Also, nine Masters’ Degree holder in Nursing (for March, 2013), one Master’s Degree in Chemical Pathology (for July, 2013), six Master’s Degree holders in Nursing (for April, 2012) and one Bachelor of Nursing Science (for 2011/2012 academic year) graduated.

Three cabinet ministers honoured the special convocation organised at the Dorothy L. Njeuma Amphitheatre in the UB. Prof. Jacques Fame Ndongo, Minister of Higher Education, co-chaired the ceremony with Andre Mama Fouda, Minister of Public Health, flanked by Prof.

Abena Ondoa née Marie-Therese Obama, Minister of Women’s Empowerment and the Family.

Mama Fouda announced at the event that all Medical Doctors graduated from UB since 2012 will be absorbed into the public service and put at the disposal of the Ministry of Public Health. He urged UB to consider the training of Midwives soonest owing to the great need on the field.

Minister Fame Ndongo saluted the innovation by UB to organise a special and separate convocation this year for health professionals in.

He announced the beginning of the construction of a 250-seat Amphitheatre for the Faculty of Health Sciences.

He recalled recent huge investments carried out in UB through the Technology and Professional Component Support Project (PRO-ACTP) that enabled the institution to realise its new buildings inaugurated last October 2013 and offering new laboratories and office spaces for staff.

To forestall the ills known today in medical practice, the Vice Chancellor of UB, Dr. Nalova Lyonga, urged the graduating medics not to allow the search for money corrupt and close their eyes on human lives.

The VC told the audience that the Minister of Women Empowerment and the Family, present, was bearer of a gift of FCFA 500,000 for UB.

The best graduating student, Akem Dimala Christian, addressed the audience expressing gratitude for the Head of State, President Paul Biya, for creating a Medical School at UB eight years ago.

He emphasised that being a Medical Doctor was not just about wearing a clean lab coat with a stethoscope round the neck but a matter of dealing with human lives, staying awake to answer distress calls and attending to all emergencies concerning human pain.

He prided that the 2014 batch earned outstanding results defending their MD thesis with 100 per cent success and 19 honours.
