The Cameroon People’s Party, CPP, will be boycotting the 44th edition of the National day come Friday May 20, the party’s leader, Edith Kah Walla has announced in a press release issued on Tuesday.
CPP officials said they will not take part in activities across the national territory to mark the day.
According to Walla who spoke to The Cameroon Journal by phone, their decision to boycott the National Day follows the systematic exclusion of the party from taking part in the celebration in Yaounde, Mfoundi Division, where President Paul Biya is expected to preside over the ceremony.
It should be noted that the Senior Divisional Officer for Mfoundi, Jean Claude Tsila had earlier on limited the participation of political parties to those represented in parliament. By virtue of the prefectural order, only nine political parties: CPDM, SDF, ANDP, NUDP, MDR, UPC, MRC, FSNC and UDC, will be allowed to march past in Yaounde.
Walla said the Mfoundi SDO has always excluded the CPP since 2011. “He is simply trying to legitimize an old practice,” she noted.
The firebrand female political leader equally said “several other administrative authorities, notably in the Wouri, Mfoundi and Nyong Ekelle, are using diverse illegal and anti-democratic tactics to sideline the CPP from May 20 celebrations.” As such, she insisted that the CPP will not participate in any national parade across the country.
The CPP leader told The Cameroon Journal that, instead, on Friday, May 20, they will organize a special Black Friday campaign. She noted that Friday’s campaign will be principally pecked on the theme: “The Anglophone Problem in Cameroon.”
The Black Friday campaign was launched a few months ago by an opposition coalition. The campaign aims at bringing reasonable change to Cameroon.
