As deadline to end registration narrows, the body is going closer and closer to potential voters.
"The aim was to bring ELECAM mobile teams to civil servants in the ministry to register so as to cast their ballot and choose their mayors and Parliamentarians when time comes. They are always in office and it is difficult for them to be free to go to their respective localities where they can register. By having ELECAM in these premises, it will facilitate registration," Communication Minister, Issa Tchiroma Bakary made this statement yesterday February 20 while encouraging biometric registration in his ministry in Yaounde.
But before the MINCOM boss came calling at the annex building of his ministry where the registration was going on, the ELECAM mobile registration team, by 9:30 am, had started thumb printing, taking photographs, collecting information on potential voters and issuing registration receipts to workers of MINCOM. "My presence here is just to encourage ELECAM workers and staff of the ministry," Issa Tchiroma said while shaking hands with the mobile team operators. "Impressive turnout!" Roger Martial Atouba, one of the registration operators for the Yaounde VII Council exclaimed. He explained that a potential voter should first of all identify his neighbourhood before he/she is sent to the corresponding ELECAM registration operator in charge.
The same exercise has been going on in other public offices in Mfoundi Division. The Ministries of Posts and Telecommunications, Youth Affairs and Civic Education, Employment and Vocational Training and the Court of Appeal for the Centre Region, joined MINCOM yesterday to register staff on the biometric registration voters' lists. Those of External Relations, Higher Education, Forestry and Wildlife, State Property and Land Tenure and of Environment, Protection of Nature and Sustainable Development take the relay this February 21.
