Governors of the 10 Regions of the country have been called upon to reduce social tension in their respective areas of jurisdiction.

The call was made by the Minister of Territorial Administration and Decentralisation, Rene Emmanuel Sadi, at the first semester conference of Governors for 2016, held at the Yaounde City Council Hall.

The call comes at a time when Governors are grappling with the challenges of insecurity, influx of refugees, land disputes and bird flu, among other disturbing social issues.

The Minister asked the Governors to ensure relative peace and stability in their different regions.

“Administrators should, in their efforts of consolidating a state of law, should ensure the promotion of peace, security and social cohesion,” Minister Sadi stated.

The Minister further challenged the administrators to follow up and regularly supervise major developmental projects in their Regions for a quick and better realisation of the three-year emergency plan set by the Head of State in December 2013.

“A larger part of national development depends on the supervisory ability of Governors,” he stated.

Sadi also charged the territorial administrators to engage in research and accompany initiatives that promote job creation, while making the economy vibrant and competitive.

The Governors’ conference, which serves as a platform of evaluating the actual situation of the Regions, also empowers the administrators on measures to adopt when faced with difficulties in the execution of their duties.

To Southwest Governor, Okalia Bilai, developmental projects in his Region are on a good footing, especially with the town to host the African Nations Cup in the months ahead. He said work is being concluded on a good road network and hotel facilities.

“The hosting of the 50th Anniversary of Cameroon’s Reunification enabled the town of Buea and the Region, in general, to embark on certain projects which contributed in developing the Region.

The recent appraisal by the Prime Minister during his visit to inspect the stadiums indicates that we are in accordance with the emergency plan of developing the country,” he said.

Mindjiyawa Bakary of the Far North appreciated Government and military efforts in combatting the terrorist group, Boko Haram.

“Less attacks are happening in the Region and general activities are gradually returning to normal, though at a timid rate,” he stated.

The Governors also renewed their knowledge on the rule of law, handling political demonstrations and the application of the recently revised and adopted penal code
