The Secretary General of the main opposition party, Social Democratic Front, SDF, Professor Elisabeth Tamanjong has resigned from her duties as Secretary General of that party.

This decision is contained in a letter dated 12th February 2015 and handed to party officials during the SDF National Executive Committee NEC, meeting on 14th February 2015 in Bamenda.

Professor Elizabeth Tamanjong in the letter stated that she could no longer continue in the function after “having tried unsuccessfully to make the party revert to its initial spirit, ideals and commitment of the early 90s”.

Professor Elizabeth Tamanjong, states in the letter, however, that she remains an SDF militant.

She became a member of Cameroon's leading opposition party in 1991. Before becoming Secretary-General, one of the most influential positions in the party in 2006, she was Assistant Secretary General.

Her resignation has sparked off some degree of controversy concerning the management of the party because she is third Secretary General to have resigned from that position since the party was created on 24th March 1990.
